“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the single candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”
Today is World Mental Health Day and the focus is mental health in the workplace. We forget that for most of us, a large majority of our life is spent in work and our experience in the workplace is one of the factors determining our overall well-being. Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians are affected by mental illness, yet many don’t seek help because of stigma? To me that makes me even more inspired to write my blog as I want to change that stigma and raise awareness so people don’t have to suffer in silence.
Everyday I try to think of new ways to inspire my team and create a positive workplace. I want all staff to be comfortable in talking to me if they are going through a rough patch and know that they’ll be supported regardless of whether it’s a physical or mental health problem they’re facing. I shared the below video with my team during a morning meeting as its cleverly puts into perspective the amount of time we spend doing particular things in life. Out of the 28,835 beans we approximately start with we spend a huge 3,202 of them in work. This shows the importance of being happy in the place you dedicate so much of your time too and as an employer it stresses the impact you can have on your employee’s life. Creating a supportive culture and positive work environment will not only increase productivity but it will also attract good people to join your business whether it’s as a new customer, patient or employee.
