How to adjust your “what if’s” into something positive!
What if everything that happened here, happened for a reason?
What if thoughts come in a multitude of shapes and sizes; some can be thought provoking – “What if I win the lottery?” while others can be unsettling – “What if I die tomorrow?”
A healthy amount of what ifs are necessary to help us make decisions that keep us safe in the moment or prompt us to make a choice that will help keep us protected in the future. (Like taking out car or home insurance in case of an accident.)
It’s only when you combine what if questions with excessive worry and anxiety that they become a problem and are detrimental to your mental health.
If you are someone who consumes themselves with what ifs you need to keep in mind that when you ask yourself what if you are basically asking yourself a hypothetical question and searching for a hypothetical answer and there are endless possibilities as to what the answer could be.
You are robbing yourself of the present moment and wasting energy on the unknown.
So here is a tip that I think is pretty bloody helpful!
For every negative what if you ask, flip it to a positive what if?
What if everything works out? What if nothing bad happens? What if you prove your doubts wrong?
If we’re honest with ourselves we already know that 99% of the time everything works out okay we just have a habit of automatically thinking of the worst. If you are a serial what if questioner start making a habit of questioning what good could happen before doing yourself damage and missing out on what’s really important.. the now.
